AIDA

Cross-Stitch Aida come in different "COUNTS".
14-count Aida is the most popular.

The count refers to how many squares or threads there are in the fabric per inch - thus 14-count means there are 14 squares per inch. Other popular Aida counts are 11-count, 16-count and 18-count.

When working out the size of your aida don't forget to allow extra for framing, at least 2" at each side.

FLOSS

Floss or Thread has 6 strands, and comes in 8m skeins.

Most charts suggest either DMC or Anchor brands.

When using 14 count aida you will use only 2 strands at a time for stitching and 1 strand for backstitching. On 11 count Aida use 3 strands to stitch and 2 to backstitch. For 16, or 18 count aida you would normally use 1 strand for all stitches.

BOBBINS

To keep your threads/floss tidy you will need some bobbins, these come in many different shapes and sizes but the plastic Anchor ones as shown in the picture are the most popular.

(cardboard ones are cheaper but not as hardwearing)

NEEDLES

For counted cross stitch you normally use a tapestry needle size 24 or 26. This type of needle has a blunt point and a large eye.

You may wish to have more than one needle for different thread colours to save time rethreading your needle.

Use a size 24 for stitching on 14 count aida; use a size 26 for aida with a stitch count greater than 14.

SCISSORS

You can start out with any pair of scissors, but pretty soon you will want to get a nice pair of small embroidery scissors. Get a good quality pair with sharp points. A good pair of scissors makes stitching a lot more fun.

PATTERNS Cross-Stitch graphs are either COLOUR charts or BLACK and WHITE SYMBOLS charts such as the two opposite.

Each coloured square represent 1 cross stitch, as does each square with a symbol.

The arrows on each chart are to direct you to where the centre of the pattern is.

Normally this is where you would start stitching from.

All patterns come with a key, similar to the one below.

Each colour will have a number, DMC and Anchor each have their own numbers for different colours

(Note I use coloured symbols when printing all my designs, this makes symbol recognition easier)
