Cross-stitch is, in reality, a form of Embroidery using the basic "x" style stitch on any type of fabric... but most commonly on an even weave fabric.

Examples of counted cross-stitch have been discovered dating as far back as the 5th century BC. Enjoying intermittent popularity throughout the centuries, it was often used in decorations on clothing and household items. , In 1983, it became the national stitch of Denmark.

During the 16th and 17th centuries before pattern books became readily available women would record 'samples' of their favourite stitches and patterns on long strips of narrow cloth, hence the name ‘sampler’. These were not intended for display, but were rolled up and kept in a drawer until needed for reference. They became family assets that generations would refer to and add to over the years.

Cross stitching as we recognize it today was re-discovered in the sixties, when increased leisure time was a factor in the revival of counted cross-stitch for pleasure.

Even today in the 21st Century it is a pastime enjoyed by millions, young, old, female, male and blind; yes I said 'blind'. Cross stitching is the favorite hobby of many disabled people.

With modern computer software it is possible to create a cross stitch chart of just about anything you can image. Stitcher's are no longer limited to letters, flowers and teddy bears. Sci-fi, Fantasy and Gothic designs are just some of the more popular charts coming onto the market today.

So why not give it a try?
